Actually, this upgrade put me in a bad mood. Until yesterday, I had assumed that InDesign 5.5 would be file-compatible with 5. I found this was not the case when we had our first customer file come in yesterday.

It would be one thing if Adobe changed a reasonably modest fee for this upgrade, but they aren't. It's $300-$400 a seat, depending on which version of CS5 you have. We shouldn't have to tell our customers, "I'm sorry, but we don't have 5.5. Could you export that as an IDML file for us please?" so soon after CS5 came out.

This is all pretty outrageous to me, given that 5.5 adds absolutely no functionality to a 5.0 document. Everything is convenience tools, window dressing, more export formats, etc. They could easily find a way to accomodate 5.0 users, but they choose not to. I'm convinced that this is purely a monetary decision. By making 5.5 documents incompatible with 5, they are forcing print shops and service bureaus to fork out more money in the middle of their development cycle.

Based upon what I learned doing pricing surveys for Adobe, any savings you get from 5.5->6 won't justify the cost today. They are planning to raise their prices significantly. As it is, they are bound and determined to push everyone into a monthly subscription model that will cost more than buying their software outright, based upon a 24 month upgrade cycle. I expect that people will be shocked at what Adobe wants for CS6 when it comes out.

You bring up very good points, overall. I agree the more time that a person has to dedicate to their professional development, the more they will prosper in their overall life. It is always a good idea to outsource tasks that seem tedious and that do not promote overall value to their life. Finding any avenue, such as applications on a computer or mobile device, that helps organize tasks or perform tasks should be used by many people looking to help attain more time. For instance, applications on mobile devices such as personal assistant or financial apps are great examples to help save time and maybe money, too. Lastly, in today's marketplace it seems like these points can never be emphasized enough. Thanks for your great information.

Used to do wish to write the comment to tell you that the look of this site is extremely aesthetically pleasing. I had been a graphic designer, now I’m a duplicate publisher. I’ve always loved working with computer systems and ‘m trying to learn signal during my free time.
